Tommy Smits is a multimedia artist from the Netherlands. He works with photography and makes custom frames, sculptures and films.
🤝 "Smits aims to turn contemporary objects and photographs into fossils, his main goal in life is to one day become a fossil himself. By casting photos in concrete, Smits claims to have invented photographic-concrete, which he will refer to as “Concretography”, a method of solidifying photographs in rock. He likes to give fleeting immaterial photographs a solid and unhandy frame, or place them in the wilderness of the great backyard. He created the worlds largest frame when he climbed a mountain in Switzerland and embedded a resin cast photograph of a lawnmower in the top. The idea that archaeologists could find his work in the future, debate and determine what they found, gives Smits great enjoyment." - Ten Haaf Projects 🤝 "Using innovative framing and shaping techniques, Tommy Smits elevates vernacular imagery to a surreal photographic object, somewhere between photography and sculpture. Cast in concrete and solidified as in rock, Smits' creations become altars in memory of these images." - Ensemble 🤝
